“Exploring the Explorers”

Posted October 15, 2014

Knowing that Canadian education varies by location the Dictionary of Canadian Biography has prepared an educational package that presents the history of Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain in an approachable and versatile way. They provide a range of age-appropriate exercises and project suggestions for both figures.

The Dictionary of Canadian Biography’s educational package is useful for both history and social studies teachers. Exploring topics such as geography, language arts, French as a second language, visual arts, as well as many more, this educational package is truly cross-curricular.

While the Dictionary of Canadian Biography content exposes materials for many areas of teaching, they have three key intentions:

  • To teach students to think critically,
  • To examine and interpret facts about people and events in Canadian history, and
  • To learn the difference between primary and secondary sources.
