Historical Thinking Community of Practice

2022-2023 Historical Thinking Community of Practice (HTCP)

Since 2007 the Historical Thinking Project has collaborated with various partners to organize Historical Thinking Institutes (HTI) in different cities across Canada. The HTI’s have been attended by teachers, graduate students, curriculum developers, professional development leaders, historians, and museum educators who wanted to enhance their understanding of historical thinking and how to apply it in their varied contexts.

In 2021-2022 we offered the Virtual Historical Thinking Institute (VHTI) online for the first time to make the HTI more accessible for educators from different parts of Canada and around the world, less expensive, and better aligned with effective professional learning practices.

The HTI’s have been successful at providing participants with an introduction to historical thinking. However, past participants have continually requested an HTI for educators who have knowledge and experience working with historical thinking, but want to collaborate with a community of like-minded educators to further explore how to apply historical thinking in their context.

Join the HTCP

The Historical Thinking Community of Practice (HTCP) is designed to support a network of educators interested in asking questions about historical thinking, sharing examples from their practice, designing learning activities, and giving and receiving feedback.

We will be hosting six English and French sessions between September 2022 and March 2023. Each session will focus on a key aspect of designing historical thinking learning activities. Participants will be invited to join breakout rooms where they will share experiences, deepen their understanding, generate new ideas for teaching and assessing historical thinking, and discuss important issues and challenges.

The English and French sessions of the Historical Thinking Community of Practice will be held on Zoom on Tuesdays at 7pm ET / 4pm PT on following dates.
