Minister's Message
No relationship is more important to the Government of Canada than its relationship with Indigenous Peoples. We are pleased to support publications such as Canada’s History: Treaties and the Treaty Relationship.
The establishment of treaties between settlers and Indigenous Peoples has had a profound impact on a wide range of issues from land and resource use to Indigenous health care and education, as well as the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and the Crown.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I thank Canada’s History Society for offering Canadians a chance to learn about a vital part of our shared past and how it shapes our future.
By learning more about the treaties between Indigenous Peoples and the Crown, readers will be better able to understand the agreements’ present-day context and challenges, and in turn, envision more positive ways forward.
