A fast-growing database of veterans has become a boon to descendants of Toronto-area men and women who served in the world wars.

The database, created by volunteers with the Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, contains more than thirty-five thousand names — including three thousand names added just this past winter — of veterans who attended schools in Toronto prior to their time in uniform.

The For King and Country database drew the bulk of its collection from the memorials of ninety city schools. The searchable collection includes transcriptions and photographs of school war memorials along with historical background and links to other useful school and community websites.

The most recent schools to be included are Oakridge Public School and Danforth Technical School. Danforth Tech sent more students, alumni, and staff — 2,235 volunteers — than any other school in the Commonwealth.
