Remembering Beaumont-Hamel
Every year on Canada Day, people in Newfoundland and Labrador take time to remember the sacrifices made by Newfoundlanders who served in the First World War.
July 1st marks the anniversary of a particularly devastating battle that virtually wiped out most of the Newfoundland Regiment. The Battle of Beaumont-Hamel took place on the opening day of the Somme Offensive.
The Newfoundland Regiment went over the top just after 9 am and within minutes most of its members were killed or wounded. The shocking death toll devastated the people back home in what was then the Dominion of Newfoundland.
