She has dedicated her life to revealing the lives and experiences of people of African descent in Canada, a narrative that has often been absent in the historical record. Sylvia Hamilton explains how her work demonstrates that African Canadian history is Canadian history and is important for us all to learn.

This presentation was the keynote address at the 12th Canada's History Forum, Small Stories, Big Ideas, held on January 19, 2020.

Governor General's History Awards Winner Sylvia D. Hamilton is a filmmaker, writer, artist and educator. Her award-winning films include Black Mother Black Daughter, Portia White: Think on Me, and The Little Black School House. She is the 2019 recipient of the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media: The Pierre Berton Award.
