Titanic: True Stories of her Passengers, Crew, and Legacy
by Nicola Pierce
Nimbus Publishing
240 pages, $25.95
This fascinating book from author Nicola Pierce tells the stories of people who were aboard the ship Titanic on its tragic maiden voyage in April 1912. Vintage photographs and newspaper clippings are scattered throughout the book, beautifully illustrating the stories of both famous and forgotten passengers, as well as those of animals that were on the doomed vessel.
Twenty-two chapters cover topics ranging from the Titanic’s Captain Edward Smith to treasures lost in its sinking after striking an iceberg, a “mystery ship” reportedly seen by passengers struggling to survive in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic, and the Nova Scotia graveyards where some victims were buried.
While providing tales of heroism, greed, and tragedy, Pierce also shares the stories of the Titanic’s sister ships Olympic and Britannic, including their own later misfortunes.
Her first book was a children’s novel titled Spirit of the Titanic, which received rave reviews. The research she did in preparation for that book inspired her to dig deeper into the stories that are shared here. More than century after the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the sea, its stories continue to intrigue.
