2018 Young Citizens Celebrated in Ottawa
Since 2012, students have created thought-provoking and engaging videos that explore a theme relating to Canadian history as part of the Young Citizens program. These digital stories are shared across the country, encouraging a national discussion about Canada’s past.
In January 2019, the winners of the 2018 edition of the Young Citizens program journeyed to Ottawa to share their work and to receive their awards. The four days were filled with excitement and new friendships.
At the 11th Canada’s History Forum, the Young Citizens were greeted with an inspiring message by award-winning author and educator David Bouchard.
After watching a montage of their videos, the Young Citizens were presented with their awards.
The next morning, they attended the Governor General’s History Awards at Rideau Hall. A highlight was ice-skating on the historic outdoor rink after the ceremony.
The weekend wrapped up with the History Makers Gala, which took place at the Canadian War Museum. During the dinner, each Young Citizen went up on stage and proposed a toast to an innovator in Canadian History.
It was the perfect way to conclude the weekend and showcase the bright future of these young Canadians.
Canada’s History is grateful to Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life for providing a capacity-building grant to support Young Citizens while future funding is secured. We would also like to thank the regional Heritage Fair coordinators for all of their work promoting this program in nearly 80 communities across Canada.
