Virtual Historical Thinking Institute

2022-2023 Virtual Historical Thinking Institute (VHTI)

For over a decade the Historical Thinking Project in collaboration with Canada’s History and other partners have organized an annual Historical Thinking Summer Institute in different cities across Canada. The intensive weeklong institute has been attended by teachers, graduate students, curriculum developers, professional development leaders, historians, and museum educators who wanted to enhance their understanding of historical thinking and their expertise in designing history programs, courses, units, lessons, projects, or educational resources that explicitly focus on historical thinking.

In order to make the Historical Thinking Institute more accessible for educators, less expensive, and more aligned with effective professional learning practices, we offered the 2021-2022 Historical Thinking Institute online for the first time, and we will be doing the same in 2022-2023. Participants are invited to participate in eight synchronous and interactive workshops that will be held in English and French once per month from September 2022 until April 2023.

The first workshop will introduce the basics of historical thinking, and each of the following six sessions will focus on one of six historical thinking concepts included in the historical thinking framework conceptualized by Dr. Peter Seixas: evidence and interpretations, historical significance, continuity & change, cause & consequence, perspective-taking, and the ethical dimensions of history. In the final session participants will reflect on their learning from the previous sessions, share examples of how they are applying historical thinking in their context, and identify next steps for implementing historical thinking in their context.

In each workshop, presenters will use relevant examples to introduce key aspects of historical thinking and share resources and learning activities that can be used to teach and assess historical thinking. Participants will be invited to join breakout rooms with other participants where they will share experiences, deepen their understanding of key concepts, generate new ideas for teaching and assessing historical thinking, and discuss important issues and challenges.
