Julie-Catherine Mercadier
Ècole Primaire Terre-des-Jeunes, La Salle (Quebec)
Julie-Catherine Mercadier hopes that her grade 5–6 students, newly arrived in Canada, will come to understand the history behind the street names and sites around them. She therefore developed an entire unit on New France and proposed a multidisciplinary approach to learning. Building a scale model of the Fortress of Louisbourg, re–enacting some of the key figures in our history, learning songs that tell the tales of French and British ancestors, putting together a show in partnership with the Stewart Museum–she thought of everything to stir her students' curiosity and motivate them to know and understand the history of their new country.
